OVERVIEW

From an ancient sea to a heritage of towns

The salt deposits of Hallstatt formed through evaporation some 250 million years ago.
We follow the story from the geology underground to the cities, art and traditions that salt made possible.

Wieliczka & Bochnia

Two UNESCO salt mines near Kraków, worked for centuries.

Hallstatt

Some 7,000 years of mining history above a UNESCO lake village.

Altaussee

Austria’s largest active salt mine and the story of rescued art.

Hallein & Salzburg

A Celtic village and the city whose name comes from salt.

DAY 1. Kraków and Wieliczka

Meet in Kraków, then descend 135 metres into the Wieliczka Salt Mine to see chambers and chapels carved in salt. Overnight in Kraków.

DAY 2. Bochnia, then on to Austria

Poland’s oldest salt mine, with a multimedia route and an underground boat crossing. In the afternoon we drive south to Austria.

DAY 3. Hallstatt

By funicular to the world’s oldest salt mine, a ride down the miners’ slide, the Skywalk, and prehistoric finds in the village museum.

DAY 4. Altaussee and Salzburg

Tunnels of orange and red rock salt, an underground lake, and the wartime story of rescued art. Evening in Salzburg.

DAY 5. Hallein and the Celts

Mine train and salt lake at Dürrnberg, the Celtic village SALINA, then Salzburg’s old town, shaped by salt wealth. Next day – a relaxed drive home with rest stops along the way.
